Cummings Point - Morris Island

A Busy Day at Cummings Point!

I recently made a trip to Cummings Point, Morris Island. Given that this is such a popular place, I decided it must be a part of Charleston Charter. This page contains information about Cummings Point, Pictures, Navigation Helpers, etc so that anyone can enjoy this local popular spot.

About Cummings Point

A close spit of land near Fort Sumter, Cummings Point has historical significance in addition to being a great hangout. Morris Island was a defensive location for Charleston harbor during the civil war. Containing Fort Wagner (now gone) Morris Island was the site of two Civil War battles. Of primary significance is the assault by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an African-American regiment, immortalized in the film Glory. You can find more information about Fort Wagner and Morris Island from Wikipedia. Also of prime importance is the Morris Island Lighthouse with information at Wikipedia and the Save the Light Organization.

Navigation

Navigation up to and around Cummings Point can be tricky. This is not to say that it is dangerous or difficult, it just requires a bit of local knowledge of where you can, and can't go.

Please review the Navigation Disclaimer before using this information.

The best way to pull up to Cummings Point is from the Charleston Harbor, Rounding the Range Marker just beyond Fort Sumter and heading straight into the back side of the Island. Following this will keep you out of trouble. Puling up on the back side of the island will afford protection from waves and some currents. If you decide to venture around to the front side of the island, be sure you know your position relative to the Jetties as not doing so will bring you a bad day. See the image below for guidance.
